That's Easy

Last week I was discussing with a colleague some work that needed to be done. As I described the work, their answer was “that’s easy.” I shook my head in disbelief, because for me it seemed like a daunting task. Later, I sat down and in two hours drafted a two-page business proposal. “How did you do that so quickly?” somebody asked me. My reply was “Oh, that was easy!”

We can say “that’s easy” to a task, when the task aligns with our natural abilities and we have been good stewards of the talents God’s has blessed us with.

Be a Good Steward of your Skills

You are God’s child. You are the steward of the gifts, skills, relationships and place which God has blessed you with. God has provided you with your job and everything you need to do your job with excellence, and to pursue your career. God is honored and glorified when you are a good steward of your skills and talents.

If you aren’t a good steward of your skills and all that God has blessed you with, you won’t be able to love and serve effectively where you are today, or in the next opportunity that arises. Most likely you won’t know what lies ahead, but God does. God has placed you where you are today so that you can refine the skills, wisdom and relationships you will need for your future.

Abram's Story

In Genesis 14 we are told the story of how Abram’s cousin Lot was taken captive along with all the people of Sodom. When Abram hears this story, Abram didn’t hesitate to act. Some people would probably have tried to talk Abram out of it. They would have tried to tell him that he was embarking on a foolhardy mission to defeat an army that had just conquered all the surrounding cities. But Abram could say “This is easy!” Why? Because Abram had prepared for this eventuality.

Abram knew that he lived in an area where battles were fought. So, for years Abram put part of his wealth towards training his servants in battle, building an armory, hiring people to make weapons or buying weapons so that he was prepared for a future battle. Abram earned the loyalty of his army with the way he treated his people. As a result, they trusted him when he led them on this battle mission. Over the years Abram had learned which leaders he could trust in stressful situations. So, when he was planning the ambush, there was no doubt in Abram’s mind as to who he would choose to lead the ambush. Rescuing Lot would require a brilliant strategy. Strategy is something that Abram would have learned over the years in practice, and by observing other brilliant commanders of his era. Most importantly Abram was a good steward of God’s word. Trusting God, relying on God’s wisdom and knowing that God was faithful to his promises Abram successfully rescued Lot.

Be a Good Steward of your Team

As a good steward surround yourself with the team or teams you need to accomplish what lies ahead. Through your actions earn the trust and loyalty of your direct team and the people around you. Take the time to get to know the capabilities of each team member and of the teams you work with, so that you know what tasks you can entrust them with.

Be a Good Steward of Strategic Thinking

As a good steward take the time to learn and develop strategies to best utilize the skills and the team you have. Strategy is an intrinsic part of the nature of God’s creation. As you learn strategic thinking, you are learning more of the character of God, and the ways of God’s creation. When the opportunity arises, you will be able to develop a shrewd plan if you have been a good student of strategy.

Be a Good Steward of God's Word

Be a good steward of God’s word. God has blessed you with His word so that you might know how to live in His Kingdom. In whatever situation you find yourself, God will reveal his love, his wisdom, his faithfulness and his holiness to you through His word. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Tim 3:16-17).

Be a Good Steward When life serves you lemons ...

There are times when life serves you lemons. At those times its tempting to stop being a good steward of your talents, to stop learning, to stop applying yourself. When life serves you lemons, God is still walking beside you. When life serves you lemons continue to develop your skills, for one day God will extrude you from the juicer and place you in a new situation. Then, when you are asked why this new job is easy you will say it’s easy because of the skills you learned while juicing lemons into lemonade.

Joseph spent years working as a slave, and many more years unjustly accused in prison. Joseph used those years to develop his leadership skills and financial acumen, not knowing what the future would hold, or if he would ever leave prison. Then one day Pharaoh had a dream. Joseph never could have imagined that God would use dream to extrude him from prison into the second most important position in all of Egypt. Joseph was ready for that position because he had continued to develop his skills during his imprisonment.

Be a Good Steward When you find yourself in the desert ...

Sometimes in life when you may yourself in the desert. In the desert its tough to be motivated to be a good steward of your talents, to keep learning, to keep applying yourself. When you find yourself in the desert, God is still there beside you. One day God will lead you from the desert into a place with new responsibilities. In this new position of leadership, you will say “it’s easy” if you’ve proven God to be faithful in the desert, and if you’ve faithfully remained obedient to God in the desert.

Moses spent 40 years in the backside of the desert. Moses patiently, day in – day out honed the talents God had given him while he cared for the sheep. Moses the shepherd who had learned to trust in God in the desert was the man that God was looking for to lead his flock from Egypt to Jericho.

A Daily Habit

When you make it a daily habit to be a good steward of the skills and talents God has blessed you with; when you are a good steward of the people God has placed in your life; when you take the time to learn strategy; and when you are a good steward of God’s word and God’s promises then one day when something needs to get done which matches your God given talents, you will say “that’s easy! I’ve been preparing for that!”

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
    consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
    no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
    and gathers its food at harvest.
How long will you lie there, you sluggard?
   When will you get up from your sleep?
A little sleep, a little slumber,
    a little folding of the hands to rest—
and poverty will come on you like a thief
    and scarcity like an armed man. (Prov 6:6-11)

Unwavering Commitment

Before you enter your workplace, before you commence a new project, when you are in the middle of a project or as you are wrapping up a project remember your commitment to God. Don’t lose sight of the precious treasure you possess as God’s cherished child.

God initiated His relationship with you. God gave you the faith to accept Him as your Savior and Father. God says to you “Don’t be afraid; I will help you” (Isa 41:13). God gives you the faith you need this moment to live above any cares you may have about your work.

Being a man or woman after God’s own heart becomes a present reality when you are wholly committed to God.

God is the creator and possessor of heaven and earth. God is the source of all the blessings you enjoy. God, the King of righteousness, the Prince of peace, has blessed you in a royal fashion with joy and life. Living life in close communion with God provides the strength you need to stand firm in all circumstances, no matter who you work with or where you work.

Your commitment to God is a lifetime love relationship with God demonstrated in every circumstance, with each person you interact and everywhere you go.

Your commitment to God is a commitment to honor the Lord. You honor the Lord by the way you use the skills and abilities God has blessed you with. You honor the Lord by your integrity in word and actions. You honor the Lord by the way you love and serve people. You honor the Lord by obedience to God in the place where you find yourself today.

A commitment to God is a commitment to integrity

Your commitment to God, keeps you away from the temptations of this world. When you rightfully understand who God is, all the wonderful things of this world take their right place as things you can enjoy and use wisely; instead of becoming idols which separate you from God.

When you stand secure in the protection of God’s power, and rest in the blessings of God, then you don’t need to look to the people you work with, your employer or your work, for blessing or power. When you are wholeheartedly committed to God, God sets you free to do your work without any expectations of reward.

A Commitment to God is a commitment to people

Your commitment to God is a commitment to love and serve the people God has placed in your life. Your commitment to God is a commitment to love and serve the people in your church, the people you work with, and the people you play with.

When you are committed to God, you can work with joy side by side wonderful loving Christians and people trapped in sin. Why – because when you commit your life to God, God is fully committed to you. Nothing and no person can separate you from God’s love. The lifestyle and choices of the people you work with doesn’t change God’s unwavering commitment to you.

The people God has placed in your life may tempt you to respond sinfully to them or may tempt you into sinful behavior. However, when God holds first place in your life, God will give you the strength to lead you away from temptation and to deliver you from evil.

You won’t be the first person, or the last person to respond sinfully to the people around you. When David was snubbed by Nabal, he was ready to kill him and would have done so if Abigail, Nabal’s wife hadn’t intervened (1 Sam 25). Peter succumbed to the pressure of the servants around the fire the night Jesus was arrested. But know this – when you respond sinfully, God is merciful and gracious, and freely offers you forgiveness.

When you are committed to the people you work with, even if they don’t share your values and ethics, you are demonstrating your unwavering faith that God has blessed each of your coworkers and friends with their skills and abilities.

A Commitment to God is a comment to a place

Your commitment to God, is a commitment to the place where you find yourself right now. God created the place where you are. God has placed you where you are. Your commitment to God, is a commitment to remain where you are, to remain in your church, to remain with your family, to remain in your workplace until God leads you somewhere else. When you are committed to God, you can sing praises to God in the darkest of places, even as Paul and Silas could sing while they were in prison (Acts 16:25).

Knowing when to move on or when to stay is a commitment to obedience and trust in God.

Be careful. Sometimes like Jonah you can choose to take a boat in the opposite direction to where God is calling you. Sometimes you can consciously or subconsciously make choices that limit the places where you can go. Don’t be afraid of the place that God has brought you to.

Don’t be afraid of the place God is calling you to. God knows exactly what you need for the place where you are today. God knows exactly what you need for the place God is calling you to. Out of God’s infinite storehouse of riches and blessing, God will supply your every need. So remain wholly committed to God, passionately seeking his Kingdom as you go about your work today.

This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength” (Isa 30:15).

His compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
     great is your faithfulness.
I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;
    therefore I will wait for him.”

The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,
     to the one who seeks him;
it is good to wait quietly
     for the salvation of the Lord. (Lam 3:22-26)

Embracing Opportunities

In Genesis 14 we’re told the story of how Lot was taken captive after Sodom, the city where he lived, was defeated in battle. The city of Sodom had a bad reputation because of the lifestyle of its citizens.

Living close by, his uncle Abraham could have chosen to identify with the lifestyle of the people of Sodom, but he chose instead to honor God with his life. When Abraham heard what happened, Abraham could have chosen not to get involved. He could have reasoned that if God allowed this, who was he to interfere. Or Abraham could have been paralyzed by the thought that how could he, a mere farmer, defeat a king and army who had just conquered multiple cities. Instead Abraham chose to rescue his cousin.

Now Abraham never could have considered rescuing his cousin if he hadn’t been a good steward of the skills and talents God had given him. Knowing that he lived in a territory where conflict was common, Abraham put part of his wealth toward preparing for battle. He trained his servants in the art of war. He acquired weapons either by hiring people to make them or by buying them. He studied strategy, so that he knew what actions to take in the eventuality that he would have to enter into battle. He took the time to know the capabilities of his servants so that he knew who to place in what position for the battle. He earned the trust of his servants so that they would follow his leadership in what some would have categorized as a foolish pursuit.

Most importantly Abraham remained unwaveringly committed to God throughout his life. God had made outrageous, generous promises to Abraham. God had promised Abraham that he would have countless children, that he would possess all the land of that area, and that he would be a blessing to all people. Abraham continued to trust in God despite the fact that having a child seemed like an impossibility and he hadn’t seen God fulfill any of these promises yet. Abraham remained faithful not only to God, Abraham remained faithful to the people God placed in his life, and the place where God led him to.

Considering his choices, steering clear of temptation, being a good steward by preparing for this unforeseen event, and being wholly committed to God were the secrets that prepared Abraham to wage war against the king and his army who had defeated Sodom. Abraham’s unwavering commitment to God brought a quiet trust that Jehovah, the Creator of Heaven and Earth, would deliver these enemies into his hands.

But before he headed out, Abraham pressed the pause button. He paused to commit the entire endeavor to God. He made an oath before God that he would not use this as an opportunity to gain wealth or property. Only then was Abraham ready to go into battle with joy, and without fear.

As a result of being committed to God, of being prepared, of avoiding sin and choosing to honor God, Abraham and his servants were successful not only in rescuing Lot, but they also defeated the enemy king and his army; and restored all that had been taken from Sodom.

In your career there will arise opportunities for God to use your skills and abilities in unique ways. You can embrace these opportunities without fear and with joy if you are wholly committed to God. Prepare for them by being a wise steward of the skills and talents God has given you. Steer clear of temptation so that your heart is pure and your hands are clean when you embark on a new opportunity.

 Over the next few weeks we will explore each of these principles in more detail.

Hope in the Lord

God is mysteriously, graciously, lovingly concerned about every aspect of your life. In God’s eyes you are not too small, too insignificant, or too sinful. You are precious and important to God. You are worthy of God’s attention and care.

Why do you complain? Why do you say “My way is hidden from the Lord; my cause is disregarded by my God?” (Isa 40:27-28)

Who can accurately comprehend any aspect of God or tell him what to do? Was there a heavenly committee meeting that planned the earth, or that planned your life? With whom will you compare God? To what image will you liken him? Who is God’s equal? (Isa 40:18,25)?

God speaks to you! God who spoke creation into existence, daily speaks words of grace, comfort, hope, forgiveness, restoration, encouragement, and truth to you personally. You can take God’s words to heart and believe them for they are true. God’s words can move you forward when you are paralyzed by circumstances. God’s words will give you hope while you wait.

God is absolutely sovereign over every organization and nation. God is infinitely greater then your work, your company and the people you work with. God sits enthroned above all principalities and powers of this world.

God who rules from with a mighty arm from his throne in heaven tenderly gathers you like a lamb in his arms and carries you close to his heart. God who freely offered His Son as Savior and Redeemer gently leads you along.

Your Shepherd’s strength is tireless, and His wisdom is unfathomable. With a strong arm and a tender touch your Shepherd knows just what you need. God knows not only just what you need; God knows what each of the sheep in his flock needs.

God who created each star and calls each star by name, who knows their very essence; also knows your hopes and dreams, your gifts and limitations, your fears and joys. “God is promiscuously generous; he shares the wonders of creation, the brilliance of the sun and seasons, with everyone – the just and the unjust alike (Matt. 5:45)”1  God longs to share his character with you.

God’s power never weakens. God never grows weary. God’s omnipotent strength is sufficient not only for himself, but also for you. In fact, God graciously offers to you not only his strength, but his love, his joy, his peace, his patience, his kindness, his goodness, his faithfulness, his gentleness and his self-control.

God never ignores you or forgets you. You are God’s child. God gave his Son for you. You are God’s passion and special possession.

Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint. (Isa 40:27-31)
